3 minute read

It’s no secret that LGBTQ+ trailblazers have made remarkable strides across all industries, including tech and IoT. At KORE, we continue to celebrate their contributions and the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workforce – along with some tips on how to foster inclusion and promote diversity within your own organisation 🌈…

Queer Pioneers:

  1. Lynn Conway: A transgender pioneer and computer scientist, Lynn revolutionised computing with groundbreaking work in microelectronics and VLSI design. Despite discrimination, she excelled and advocated for diversity in STEM.
  2. Tim Cook: Apple's visionary CEO, openly gay since 2014, has championed LGBTQ+ rights. His leadership inspires authenticity and inclusion within tech.
  3. Leanne Pittsford: Founder of Lesbians Who Tech & Allies, Leanne created a global community for LGBTQ+ individuals in tech. Her efforts promote belonging and representation.
  4. Dr. Vivienne Ming: A neuroscientist and AI expert, Dr. Ming's work explores human potential. Their story reminds us that diversity drives innovation.

How to Promote Diversity and Inclusion:

Creating inclusion starts at home. Promoting diversity and inclusion within companies is crucial for fostering innovation, creativity, and a positive work environment. Here are some effective strategies for doing so…

Education and Training: Companies should provide regular diversity training for employees. This helps raise awareness about biases, microaggressions, and the importance of inclusivity.

Diverse Hiring Practices: Actively recruit from underrepresented groups. Implement blind resume screening to reduce unconscious bias. Consider diverse panels during interviews.

Inclusive Policies: Develop and enforce policies that protect LGBTQ+ rights, accommodate different needs, and promote equal opportunities. Examples include parental leave, gender-neutral restrooms, and flexible work arrangements.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Encourage the formation of ERGs for LGBTQ+ employees. These groups provide support, networking, and advocacy.

Representation: Showcase diverse role models in leadership positions. Visibility matters and seeing LGBTQ+ leaders inspires others.

Affinity Events: Host events and other relevant occasions. Celebrate diversity, educate employees, and create a sense of community.

Metrics and Accountability: Set diversity goals and track progress. Hold leaders accountable for creating an inclusive workplace.

Remember, diversity isn’t just about numbers – it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. Tech thrives when diverse voices are heard, and as we reflect on this year’s Pride it is a reminder to celebrate and support LGBTQ+ professionals in our industry. 🌟🏳️‍🌈
